  What is Attac ? As financial markets and the profit motive increasingly take over society, Attac seeks to be a source of alternatives. Attac was founded in 1998 and its first concrete proposal was the taxation of financial transactions in order to create a development fund and to help curb stock market speculation. This is what gave A T T A C its name: the Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions to Aid Citizens. Today, the Attac network is present in many countries and is active on a wide range of issues: the WTO and international financial institutions, debt, taxation of financial transactions, tax havens, public services, water, free-trade zones (Mediterranean, American, European etc.). In each country, the association has groups working on various themes. All of these groups are involved in national and international campaigns whose aim is to propose concrete alternatives to neoliberal orthodoxy, based on solidarity.

  Biophotonik Pflanzen strahlen in der Dunkelheit (zwei Acetabularia a.) Mit der Biophotonenanalyse können wir ein neuartiges Analyseverfahren anbieten, das jede relevante Veränderung des biologischen oder physiologischen Zustandes eines Lebewesens als Änderung der Biophotonenemission nachweist. Bei der Biophotonenanalyse wird die Lichtabgabe nach definierter Lichtanregung gemessen. Dazu haben Professor Fritz-Albert Popp und Mitarbeiter eines der lichtempfindlichsten Meßgeräte(10-17 Watt) entwickelt. Das ganz spezielle Abklingverhalten des Lichts ermöglicht umfassende Rückschlüsse auf die Qualität eines Lebensmittels. So kann die Biophotonenanalyse die visuelle Beurteilung von Qualität objektiv und sinnvoll ersetzen. Die Anwendung beruht auf 25-jähriger Erfahrung. Die Methode wird bereits von einigen bedeutenden Unternehmen der Lebensmittelindustrie und staatlichen Forschungseinrichtungen mit großem Nutzen eingesetzt.Diese sogenannte "verzögerte Lumineszenz" (delayed luminescence)und ihr enger Zusammenhang zur "Biophotonenemission" sowie zu allen biologischen Eigenschaften der untersuchten Objekte einschließlich intra- und interzellulärer Kommunikation wurde von Popp erstmals aufgedeckt und vollständig beschrieben. Diese Phänomene sind zur Zeit intensiver Forschungs-und Enticklungsgegenstand der international führenden Wissenschaftler auf dem Gebiet der Biophotonik (www.lifescientists.de).

We think all people deserve the chance to have healthy, productive lives. We have been developing a process that helps us decide how to spend our time, effort, and money so we can accomplish that goal for as many people as possible. This process helps us choose the issues we will work on and the groups to which we will make grants. This page explains that process. Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett set our overarching priorities—such as improving health and reducing extreme poverty in the developing world and improving high school education in the U.S.—and they establish high-level goals for our grantmaking programs. Then our three program teams devise a strategy for meeting these goals. We do not pretend that the process outlined below is unique to us. In fact, we have borrowed much from other organizations that have been making grants much longer than we have. We also recognize that we don’t always follow this process to the letter with every grant; in some cases it represents our aspirations as much as reality. Finally, this process is evolving as we get better at choosing strategies, making grants, and evaluating the results. 1. Define the problem and opportunity 2. Develop the strategy and agree on a budget 3. Make grants consistent with strategy 4. Measure results and learn 5. Adjust strategy 1. Define the problem and opportunity Long before we make a single grant for any given issue, we listen and learn about problems that cause great inequity. Whether the challenge is low-yield crops in Africa or low graduation rates in Los Angeles, we begin by immersing ourselves in information about problems that cause great harm and get far too little attention. We hire people with deep knowledge of the issues to staff our grantmaking program teams. We also seek different views from people beyond our own staff, including academics, businesses, scientists, local organizations, and other philanthropists. We’re interested in what has worked and what has failed. As we consider the best approach, we look for ways to complement other efforts and engage with partners. We also have advisory panels in our program areas to give us candid advice and help us increase our impact. As we learn about an issue, we ask whether we can make a difference with our money and our ability to bring partners together. We get involved only if we believe that governments and businesses will be able to deliver any solutions we might help fund. Example Our early learning strategy was born of this kind of intense inquiry. When we realized Washington state was behind the nation in preparing children to thrive in school, we thought we could help bring attention to the problem and help mobilize action to solve it. But first we needed to understand why children were struggling. We drew on the expertise of academics, researchers, financial and policy analysts, early learning centers, nonprofit organizations, parents, and others. These included the Foundation for Early Learning, the Talaris Research Institute, the University of Washington Human Services Policy Center, and others. We also sought the advice of organizations outside of the state, such as the Ounce of Prevention Fund and the Harlem Children’s Zone. We studied international and U.S. research findings from the public and private sectors. This information and collective wisdom helped us shape our strategy. Back to Top 2. Develop the strategy and agree on a budget Bill, Melinda, and Warren help set the broad goals for each of our three main program areas. Once they have identified an area where they want the foundation to work, the relevant grantmaking group—led by a program president—evaluates possible solutions. For each solution, the program considers its cost, the risk associated with it, its long-term viability, and, most important, its potential impact on people’s lives. Based on this survey of possible approaches, and after extensive discussion, the program identifies a strategy, which includes a budget, the results they hope to achieve, and a plan to measure those results over the short and long term. They present this strategy for approval by Bill and Melinda and CEO Patty Stonesifer. Example The foundation’s global health strategy prioritizes diseases and health conditions that cause widespread sickness and death in the developing world yet receive too little attention. Malaria, which kills more than 2,000 African children every day, is one of our priority diseases. Working with experts and partners, members of our Global Health team crafted an approach to help fight the deadly disease, identifying key gaps in malaria efforts and outlining the cost. The Global Health team first presented a malaria strategy to Bill, Melinda, and Patty in 2004. Once it had been approved, the team moved on to the next step: making grants that were consistent with that strategy. Back to Top 3. Make grants consistent with strategy Once we decide on a strategy, we consider grants that will support it. Our program officers start by asking key questions: Given the strategy we’ve chosen, who are the right partners? What organizations are best suited for the work? How much money is required? How will we measure the effectiveness of the effort? Who can most successfully manage the grant? Who is best qualified to evaluate it? Once they’ve answered these questions, program officers recommend particular grants. The program presidents have significant authority to make grants that are in line with a previously approved strategy. Especially large grants must be approved by Patty Stonesifer, and the very largest by Bill and Melinda. Most of our grantmaking goes to large intermediary partners—organizations that in turn provide funding and support to those doing the work in the field. This lets us take advantage of expertise that others already have, and it builds up expertise among people in the field rather than simply on our staff. In our U.S. Program, for example, we make grants to charter management organizations, which use the funds to support groups that are creating successful new schools. Back to Top 4. Measure results and learn We are willing to take risks to address the issues that are important to us, and we recognize that the steps we take—or that our grantees take—may not always be the right ones. That’s why, once we’ve made a grant, we expect the grantee to measure the results. We require our grantees to carefully track and report on their work in the field. We believe constructive feedback improves the quality of the work, so we also turn to outside evaluators, advisors, and experts to help us examine our efforts and give us honest counsel. Evaluating our work (and our grantees’) is important, and we are always looking for ways to do it more effectively. We seek to share evaluations in various forums, including by circulating them to our partners and posting them on our Web site (see links below). We are building a team of people who specialize in measuring the impact of our grantmaking, and we actively solicit feedback on our efforts from outside experts. In 2006, we published case studies to help shed light on what we’re learning. We believe these urgent problems belong to all of us collectively. We want to find out what works and why, and then share what we’re learning. The more we can help each other, the better chance we have of finding solutions and getting them to the people who need them the most. Adjust strategy Of course, measuring progress and getting feedback is only useful if you’re willing to act on the results. Once we’ve gathered feedback, our program presidents and CEO decide whether to continue with the existing strategy or to make adjustments. If necessary, they seek approval from Bill and Melinda to change course. Example We launched the Washington State Achievers Program in 2001 to improve graduation rates and college-going rates at 16 struggling high schools. In the intervening years we’ve learned some important lessons through the program that have affected our work nationwide. The Achievers program has two major components: school redesign and college scholarships. The 16 schools were redesigned from large comprehensive schools to smaller schools where students were enrolled in rigorous classes and got more personal attention from teachers. The program also awards college scholarships to more than 3,800 low-income students from these schools, many of whom are the first in their families to go to college. Unfortunately, academic improvement in the Achievers schools has come more slowly than originally hoped. Through the Achievers program we learned that redesigning a school puts extraordinary demands on principals and teachers. We learned not to overemphasize size to the exclusion of other improvements, such as the quality of classroom teaching. And we found that we can’t expect schools to take on ambitious improvement initiatives without engaging everyone in the process— students, parents, teachers—and without gaining the support of their districts. These lessons have affected how we work with schools and districts throughout the country, including the Achievers program we launched in Washington, D.C., in 2007.

  Not der Blütenbestäuber Viele Blüten besuchende Insekten ernähren sich nicht nur vom Nektar, den die Blüten abgeben, sondern sie benötigen den Pollen als Eiweißnahrung. Alle Bienen, die Honigbiene ebenso wie die Wildbienen decken ihren Eiweiß-Bedarf ebenso wie den der Jungtiere zu 100% mit Blütenpollen. In vielen Regionen Deutschlands bilden landwirtschaftliche Kulturpflanzen wie Raps, Mais und Sonnenblume die Haupt-Pollenquelle für diese Insekten. Wildpflanzen, die diese Versorgung leisten könnten, wurden aus der Kulturlandschaft in hohem Maße vor allem durch intensive Landwirtschaft verdrängt. Im Falle der Einführung von Agro-Gentechnik werden sich diese Insekten zu einem mehr oder weniger großen Anteil mit gentechnisch verändertem Pollen ernähren. Die Auswirkungen sind nicht absehbar. Beobachtet wurde ein Rückgang der Vielfalt von Insekten und Wildpflanzen. Ebenso wurde ein Überschreiten der Artgrenzen bei der Verdauung von gentechnisch verändertem Pollen im Darm von Honigbienen beobachtet. Zu befürchten sind zudem Schäden der Insekten, vor allem der Bienen durch Toxin-haltigen Pollen (z.B. Bt-Mais).

In der Schule, auf dem Spielplatz oder auf dem Weg nach Hause. Gewalt durch Mitschüler, Diebe, Pädokriminelle und viele andere mehr sind sowohl in städtischen als auch in ländlichen Regionen zum Alltag geworden. Bei Gewalt von großen an kleinen Kindern, bei ausländerfeindlich motivierter Gewalt gegen Kinder, bei der Diskriminierung von Schwächeren und bei körperlicher Gewalt setzt die Notinsel ein Gegengewicht. Kinder sind Gewalt und vielen Gefahren meist schutzlos ausgeliefert. Sie sind die schwächsten und damit schutzbedürftigsten Mitglieder unserer Gesellschaft. Alle Läden und Geschäfte, die das Notinsel-Zeichen an ihrer Tür anbringen, signalisieren Kindern: „Wo wir sind, bist Du sicher“.

  1996... Von meiner ersten Kenia-Reise im Jahr 1996 kam ich mit einem Gefühl der Betroffenheit und Hilflosigkeit zurück. Ich kam mit Menschen weit außerhalb der typischen Touristenregionen in Kontakt, erlebte unvor- stellbare Armut, die Auswirkungen der Aids-Problematik und die traurige Situation der Waisenkinder. Zunächst versuchte ich auf privater Basis durch Übernahme von Schul- geldern und Krankenbehandlungskosten dort zu helfen, wo die Not am größten ist. All meine Bemühungen konnten jedoch nur den berühmten, "Tropfen auf den heißen Stein“ darstellen, da die Situation der Betroffenen immer bedrohlicher wird. So wurde aus einer anfänglich privaten Initiative letztendlich am 3. Juli 2003 „Nyota“, ein Verein, der mittlerweile auf 20 Mitglieder angewachsen ist. Nyota ist Kiswahili und bedeutet Stern – Sinnbild für Hoffnung. Und in diesem Sinne konzentrieren wir unser Engagement derzeit auf die Vorbereitungen zum Bau einer Kindertagesstätte, einem sog. "Day Care Centre" in Lwala. Hier sollen nach Fertigstellung des Gebäudes Ende des Jahres 2007 die ersten Waisenkinder ein neues Zuhause finden. Bärbel Kirschenlohr

Mayors for Peace ruft ihre momentan (1. Oktober 2008) 2422 Mitgliedsstaedte in 131 Ländern auf, die Kampagne zu unterstützen, um sich so in die Verhandlungen über Atomwaffen einzumischen. Sie werden dabei von Friedensgruppen auf der ganzen Welt sowohl auf lokaler als auch internationaler Ebene unterstützt. Am 18. Oktober 2007 erhielten die Bürgermeister für den Frieden die Auszeichnung "Nuclear Free Future Award" in der Kategorie "Lösungen".

In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday. We all have a vote, and every single vote counts.   Dr. Daniel Erlacher studierte von 1995 bis 2001 am Institut für Sport und Sportwissenschaft (ISSW) der Universität Heidelberg die Fächer Sport, Psychologie und Pädagogik. Während seines Studiums verbrachte er ein Jahr in den USA und studierte an der Oregon State University und absolvierte ein Praktikum an der Stanford University. Von 2002 bis 2005 erhielt er ein Stipendium von der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes und promvierte im Jahr 2005 an der Fakultät für Verhaltens- und Empirische Kulturwissenschaften in Heidelberg mit dem Thema „Motorisches Lernen im luziden Traum“. Mit dieser Arbeit wurde er mit dem dvs-Nachwuchspreis und dem Ruprecht-Karls-Preis der Universität Heideberg ausgezeichnet. Zurzeit ist er Akademischer Rat auf Zeit am ISSW und arbeitet an seiner Habilitation zum Thema „Schlaf und Sport“. Die wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsschwerpunkte von Daniel Erlacher liegen in der Schnittmenge zwischen Sportwissenschaft und Schlaf- bzw. Traumforschung. Dabei interessieren ihn vor allem vier Teilbereiche: Schlafbegleitende Lernprozesse für motorische Aufgaben, Motorisches Lernen im luziden Traum, das Schlafverhalten von Sportlern vor Wettkämpfen sowie der Einfluss von sportlicher Aktivität auf den Schlaf. Auch in seiner Freizeit liebt er es sich dem Schlaf und dem Träumen zu widmen.

  About Us Alec, 14 years old, is a Freshman at El Camino High School, in Ventura California. He founded Kids vs Global Warming when he was 12 years old after watching Al Gore’s movie, “an inconvenient truth.” Feeling the weight of the global situation and a sense that he could make a difference, Alec felt compelled to tell other kids about the problems we are facing. His message is deeply rooted in hope, encouraging kids to speak up and let their voices be heard on this issue. Alec created a presentation made specifically for youth, full of videos, animation, easy-to-understand science, and compelling motivation for kids K-college ages. He gave over 30 global warming presentations before being invited by Al Gore to be formally trained with the Climate Project in October of 2008. He is now the youngest trained presenter with The Climate Project. Alec is a drummer for the band, State of Emergency and enjoys surfing, making movies, and graphic design.

  Wer wir sind, was wir vorschlagen und wie wir arbeiten Im Dezember 2003 sind wir – Ute Fischer (Unna), Axel Jansen (Frankfurt), Stefan Heckel (Bergisch Gladbach), Sascha Liebermann (Witten) und Thomas Loer (Bergkamen) – mit dem Vorschlag eines bedingungslosen Grundeinkommens für alle Bürger (BGE) an die Öffentlichkeit getreten. Eine Website dient seitdem als Informationsplattform. Zuerst trugen wir mittels durch Spenden finanzierte Plakatierungsaktionen in U-Bahnstationen in Frankfurt am Main – in der Folge auch in Berlin, Dortmund, Köln und Hamburg – dazu, den Vorschlag eines BGE in die Öffentlichkeit zu tragen. Jüngst haben wir mit Aufklebern in U- und S-Bahnen auf den Vorschlag aufmerksam gemacht. Statt den Weg einer weiteren Bevormundung der Bürger, wie er vielen Entscheidungen der vergangenen Jahre zu eigen ist, weiter zu beschreiten, wollten wir deutlich machen, worum es eigentlich geht: Die Zukunft unseres Landes liegt darin, die Freiheit der Bürger in unserem demokratischen Gemeinwesen zu stärken. Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung der Bürger zu ermöglichen, waren für uns entscheidend. Denn nur dann, wenn der Einzelne sich frei entscheiden kann, stärken wir zugleich die Solidarität. Das BGE ist ein wichtiges Mittel dazu. Ausführlichere Texte, die wir seitdem auf der Website ablegen, sollten deutlich machen, welche Chancen ein BGE im Verhältnis zur gegenwärtigen Form der sozialen Sicherung bietet.

  Founded in 1960 by a group of progressive parents, Michael Mount Waldorf School is a mainstream school that focuses on educating the whole child using the educational principles laid down by Dr Rudolf Steiner. We provide an age-appropriate, child-centred curriculum ensuring that our children experience wide-ranging subject matter that gives them a real sense of the world in which they live. The Waldorf curriculum is an integrated Primary and High School system with the developmental stages of the child being the basis upon which subjects are introduced. The ‘Main Lesson’, which takes place in the first two hours of the school day when the children are at their most attentive, provides an in-depth exploration of any given subject. Each main lesson block lasts approximately four weeks, during which time children learn to approach the topic using all of their senses, to feel, think and experience the subject, making it their own. Their enthusiasm for learning can be seen in the quality of the self-made books that each student creates for the main lessons. Dr Rudolf Steiner founded the first Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany in 1919. His intention was to create an education system that provided more than rote learning, one that spoke to all aspects of the child. Considered revolutionary at the time, Waldorf Education is even more relevant as we enter the 21st century.

  Bornfree Art School International {BASI} ... a special school exclusively for street, working children and freed bonded labor children. The objective is to educate and develop these children through the arts, putting them back into formal education. They share their life experiences, express themselves and contribute to the understanding of child labor in order to finally eliminate it. 127 million in India and 246 million in the world are working children. The BASI through artistic learning will teach sculpture, painting, dance, music, theater, photography and filmmaking along with reading, writing, and mathematics. The BASI is conceived as a one-year study course to begin with. We take a tangible and tactile methodology in teaching that is by the pictorial sense, which has been an important method of education along with our flourishing oral traditions of learning. Study through entertainment and sharing knowledge will be the dynamic process of learning. Art is a means for children from such difficult backgrounds to generate interest in education and get them back to the mainstream of the society. When the student is ready for artistic expressions to turn to become a professional s/he will be taken to a higher level of study, either in the BASI or placed in a specialized education institute. Not an NGO, but a People�s Movement. Bornfree Art School is not the establishment of another school, but a movement for the liberation of toiling children. This movement has to involve the people and they have to continue this endeavor. The establishment of BASIs has to expand especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America wherever child labour exists.

  Support San José de Apartadó Please join this action! Four representatives from the Peace Community San José de Apartadó in Colombia attended the Summer University 2009 at Tamera, Portugal. Two of these guests are leading members of the community. They informed us that during the past months the Peace Village has again been heavily attacked. More so, the Peace Community has been the target of a slander campaign initiated and diseminated by the mass media of Colombia. It is suspected that the campaign is conducted to warrant new murders among the inhabitants of the Peace Community. During the Summer University we have therefore prepared an action of solidarity and launched a petition which was undersigned by 226 people from 15 different nations. We ask everyone to whom the Peace Village of San José de Apartadó is known to also formulate short statements. For this you can fully use our petition. We thank all those who inform friends and collegues and ask them to sign as well.
